Chapter 3-1

Chapter 3: Of Cindy.

Zaedus' mind drifted and he thought of the fateful day which has changed his life. He was still apart of his tribe back then. Things were so very different. He recalled he had left home in the darkness and moved through a field. He was carefree, his tribe was going to stay put for awhile and he had nothing to do. This didn’t happen very often and he went for a stroll to get away for awhile. He didn’t hate it there, but he needed a break.

He found a level spot in the grass, laid down and looked to the stars. It was something he started, and would continue to do for a long time. In the distance far off worlds lay, places no one had ever been before.

It was a calm night and Zaedus almost fell asleep in the field. Then a flash in the distance alerted him. He got up and ran to see what it was. It was a very bright flash, but far away. It took Zaedus a long time to reach the source. Regardless of all things he imagined it would be, the result was a shock.

It was human…a people Zaedus had learned to mistrust in every aspect. They hunted his people like animals and in return his people fought back. An instinctive mutual hatred that escaped words, It was a battle that had continued for eternity and showed no signs of stopping. Zaedus was gripped with uncertainty.

“Hello?” It was a girl, but outlandish. Zaedus has never quite seen anyone like her before. It was something in her eyes; they looked upon Zaedus free of the fear or fury most humans had. “Who are you?”

“I could ask the same thing of you,” Zaedus replied.

“I-I…don’t remember.” She replied.

“Oh…Well my name is Zaedus. Do you know where you are?”

“No…Where are we?” She asked again.

“You’re in Tandiath,” Zaedus could see, by a faint sadness and uncertainty in her eyes, that she was not recalling anything, “Which is far west on the continent of Illium…which is in the known world. You really don’t where you are do you?”

She looked up at him, “No…”

“Do you remember anything at all?” Asked Zaedus

“Nothing,” She sighed, “Nothing at all”

“Your name even?” Zaedus asked again, “Because otherwise I don’t know what to call you."

“Uhm,” She sighed again, “Cindy, I think…”

“Well, Cindy will work,” said Zaedus, “And really, what’s in a name anyway?”

“Lots of stuff,” replied Cindy

“Sure…” Zaedus trailed off, “But you can’t stay here all night. Follow me I’ll take you to a place where you can get some rest.”

Together they walked in silence. Zaedus realized he had no place to take her. The tribe would not accept her and might even kill her on sight. On the other hand if he took her to a city, they wouldn’t accept him and he might be killed on sight. He would take her to the gates of Night Song, the nearest town. She would go in alone. They lived in seperate two worlds and they would not collide tonight. If something should happen he had his greatsword and if needed, he could defend himself.

“So…”Cindy paused, “I’m a human, and if you don’t mind me asking, what are you?”

“I’m a reptilian, some people call us lizard men, but just don’t call us lizards and we’ll be happy. You really did get addled didn’t you?”

“I don’t remember anything if that what you mean.”

“So you don’t know where you come from then…”

“No,” she sighed, “lets not talk about what I don’t remember.”

“What you don’t know then…” He stopped.

“What?” Cindy asked.

“Oh it’s nothing…” Zaedus changed the subject, “nice night though.”

“Yes it is…,” Cindy said as they arrived at Night Song.

“Anyway here is money for the Inn, “Zaedus handed her some coins. “Head in and get some sleep.”

“Aren’t you coming?” Cindy's voice filled with uncertainty and trembled.

“No I can’t,” Zaedus sighed, “Humans doesn’t like us reptilians at all. You’ll be fine in there don’t worry Cindy.”

“You’re the only one I know though! Will you please come?” Cindy asked.

Zaedus looked at the gates and at Cindy, “Ok, only because you have no memory, but we’ll have to be careful and make sure no one pays too much attention to me, or we could be in trouble. Night Song is peaceful, I doubt they have guards.”

They walked under the cover of darkness, and the people of Night Song were sleeping. They were unnoticed. They found the Inn and a sign was on the door, “Gone home, take a room and we’ll settle in the morning.”

“It’s our lucky day…or night as it may be,” Zaedus said as they opened the door and stepped inside. It was empty and keys hung behind a vacant counter. Zaedus snatched two and threw one to Cindy, who caught is clumsily. “It’s a key, you put it in the in the slot and turn it.” Zaedus mimicked the motions.

“I know what a key does!” Cindy replied.

“Well you never know with you Cindy,” Zaedus laughed. They walked to their rooms. “You go in that one,” Zaedus pointed, “Inside there will be a bed…you sleep on it”

“Cut it out will you?” Cindy glared at Zaedus opened the door and went inside.

She is a strange one…” Zaedus chuckled as he though to himself. “Says the talking lizard…”

Zaedus walked into his room and lay down upon his bed. Staring at the cieling, he knew that tomorrow was bound to get interesting.

“How do I get out of here without getting killed,” was his main concern, “I wonder if the tribe notices I’m missing?” was a distant second.
